three successive empires. The former Byzantium was renamed Constantinople by Emperor
Constantine when it became the capital of the Roman Empire. Captured by Mehmet the
Conqueror, the city became the capital of the Ottoman Empire, assuming its present
name – Istanbul.
Each empire has left a legacy of rich treasures and monuments attesting to Turkeys’
glorious past.
